The misuse of independence is already Māyā itself. The next step is that the living entity is under the influence of Māyā.
“This misuse of independence, which is called Māyā, is always available, otherwise there would be no independence.” (Śrīla Prabhupāda)
Here Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly says that misuse of independence is Māyā.
There is no Māyā in the spiritual world, na yatra māyā (2.9.10).
That means there is no misuse of independence in the spiritual world. Independence is there, but no misuse. This is the difference between the spiritual and the material world."
